son sensory issues - crushtome - 03-25-2014

HI,

I have an eleven year old son that has many sensory issues. I am trying to get directed toward the right kind of help. He has issues washing his hands. He said he actually gets pain up to a day after washing his hands. Anyone familiar with this.? He also avoids washing hands., I am afraid he's going to get sick. Also he says I chew loudly and covers his ears. He has many other quirky issues. anyone else every experience this?

thanks

Hey I recommend a weighted blanket from www.nonods.com
My son carries this everewhere and it takes his mind of cutting his hair or washing his hands,, sounds silly but it works for my son

A weighted compression vest also works well and is great for the daytime/school. My son has to wear it daily and he calms down immediately. My son often says noises that most of us don't hear "freak him out". Very common with SPD. There are parts of the brain where the neurons normally get pruned that deal with auditory processing that for whatever reason don't get pruned (in our case my son was born at 27 weeks) so we know where his came from. I pray some day they have some kind of hearing aid that maybe filters out these background noises for them as it must be overwhelming to hear a lot of "extra" sounds constantly.

I have issues in my hands after showering. I tend to avoid washing my hands. What I do however, is wear compression gloves, at least on the worst days. They make them for arthritis, so that's where I looked to find them. The compression for my hands helps a lot with my hands not hurting with all the wrong sorts of sensory inputs that are going on.

Looking into Occupational Therapy, and in particular the Wilbarger Brushing Protocol would also be a good idea for this. Brushing isn't something you want to do without a professional however.

Sounds like that; yeah, it happens and is a common SPD thing. Earplugs or ear muffs at the worst times might help to start with. There are other things that can help, but they take more time.

Hi everyone,

It's been a while but I have an important question: my little brother has the same issue with his hands... I don't live with him anymore but I just can't let him do that anymore. He constantly wants to wash his hands over and over again. Moreover, he seems to be sad all the time. I've found this blog: http://www.sensory-therapies.com/ and could you guys help me & my parents decide which therapy would be helpful?
