Anyone tried magnesium supplements?

RE: Magnesium - AngelaVA - 09-27-2011

We use Epsom Salts in the bath before bed for calming (they are made with magnesium). The thing about taking magnesium orally is that it can cause loose stools, but I suppose if constipation is an issue this could be a good thing.

RE: Magnesium - Valkyrie - 09-27-2011

I mix 25 g of magnesium chloride in one liter of filtered water then take 120 mg (higher than the RDA) of this solution daily. Tastes worse than the devil and makes me gag... but the benefits are worth it. Loose stools... I am not even sure what those are! (lol) Not a problem for me there...

Here are some facts, followed by the link...

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY AND MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for proper functioning of the body. Magnesium is found inside every living cell in the body. Magnesium is alkaline and it binds acids in the body, regulating acid-alkaline balance. Some of the major functions of magnesium in the body are: calcium, potassium, sodium and vitamin C utilization, activation of B vitamins, efficient production of enzymes, cardiac function, relaxation of muscles including the heart muscle, metabolism of carbohydrates, conversion of blood sugar into energy, bone formation, aid in proper insulin production and for prevention of aging in the cells and organs.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY

When we have a magnesium deficiency, calcium is not properly used by the body. To much calcium (calcium not balanced by magnesium) may result in cellular death and this imbalance may cause: osteoporosis, arthritis, senility, calcification of tissues and organs (including kidney, bladder and the joints) and heart disease. Excess calcium can be a problem, but excess magnesium is not because magnesium is eliminated when unused while calcium builds up. Researchers have also found that a magnesium deficiency greatly contributes to blood vessel constriction, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. Most victims of heart attacks are found to have a magnesium deficiency.

SIMPLE SIGNS THAT YOU HAVE A MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY

Too much calcium and too little magnesium can cause muscle cramps, twitches, spasms, restless leg syndrome, constipation and in extreme situations heart attack. Once they have started taking magnesium to balance the calcium, most people report a relief of some or all the symptoms in less than two weeks.

THE BENEFIT OF MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS

In addition to avoiding the ill effects of a magnesium deficiency, there are other benefits of magnesium supplements. Minerals are vital for body functions inclduing: strengthening hard tissues such as bones and teeth, helping to regulate muscle and nerve activity through influencing cell membrane permeability, functioning as electrolytes and serving as essential cofactors in enzyme catalysis. Magnesium is involved with all of these functions. Over 300 enzymes are activated by magnesium and therefore this mineral is essential to many biochemical pathways in the body. Magnesium is very important to improving bone density. Without magnesium, the calcium is not appropriately utilized by the body. Calcium formations depend upon magnesium for a strong structure. When we lack magnesium in the bones (50% of the magnesium in our body is in the bone structure), the calcium crystal formations are weaker. Because calcium is so important to the body it is added to our food and dairy. The problem is that calcium is added but magnesium is not, leaving the body with calcium it cannot absorb. This extra calcium is deposited in soft tissues. If a magnesium supplement is used, or magnesium is increased by eating more plant foods and less meat and dairy, then the body is then able to utilize the stored calcium in the tissues. There is a body of doctors and researchers that now believe that the way to manage what appears to be a calcium deficiency is to increase magnesium supplements.

I once read an article about magnesium and how it can loose our bowel. Like the other poster had said, if you have constipation, you surely need one.

Thanks for that information
